Gun Fool
An old friend stopped by today

CYA friends:

An old friend stopped by today, J-Pat brought General Lee to see me.....

J-Pat had already went through the General, and brought him to me so I could double check his findings.

I said on another post that I'd bet a dollar bill I wouldn't find anything different than J-Pat did...

And I didn't......................

CYA friends, I tell it like it is............always have......and let the chips fall where they may...

First:

J-Pat had the barrel hand tight so I could easily remove it to inspect the bore...

This ratchet was from the day...............

Absolute no washing out.......as a matter of fact the flat on top of the lands is pristine......I ain't seen a ratchet like this in years....

And no divot in front of the chamber at 6:00.......none...

This barrel has, at the most, one case through it.......or probably much less...

It is pristine, just as J-Pat said it was...

And the chamber leade is absolutely pristine....( I know the schmidt who chambered this fine ratchet)

The crown is absolutely perfect.....

But.............................................

There's always a but..................

The back third of the bore is glazed......

The ignition:

J-Pat thoroughly cleaned the internals of the breech bolt....

They were thoroughly impacted with "stuff".....

CYA friends, all rimfire action ignitions are affected by dirt and grease......not just the Turbo Class actions.

After J-Pat's clean-up the ignition is fine................

Save for one issue..............

The staked-in firing pin tip has come loose......

So where are we at?

General Lee has been, and can be again, a killer SAP ignition RFBR gun.

It needs two things:

The bore of this fine ratchet needs to be de-glazed.......

Which requires casting a lap and doing it....

And second....

The firing pin tip must be replaced......silver soldered and reshaped properly.

Think back...........

Fred Sears was killing it with the General....

Then he gave up.......

And no wonder, with the firing pin loose, and the bore glazed up, the accuracy of the General fell off..

Finally:

What happens going forward with the General is up to other folks...........

J-Pat took the General back home with him......

I do know this:

"In the right hands", and with the two corrections, the General has the potential of being one of the baddest SAP RFBR guns on Earth.

Your fried, Bill gun fool Calfee
