Let me put this another way......


What gun, and shooter, will be the next Black Death in the world of big time RFBR?



Could it possibly be a shooter shooting a SAP ignition gun? ( I guess anything is possible)

Here's my prediction:


The next Black Death will be a shooter using a 3 lug action, that uses the new DiOrio crescent firing pin............


Now, hang on to your seat...................OK


The gun will use a non-trick barrel........................


"Oh Calfee, you're pulling our leg now"............


No, I'm most serious............



The next "Black Death" in the world of big time RFBR accuracy, will be a 3 lug MD-PAS RFBR rifle.........


Now get this............


Using a non-trick barrel...



Oh yes.....................

Non trick, traditional rifled barrels do not buck the wind like trick barrels...


This is why we use trick barrels today in RFBR......


But.................................


Save for the Muller corrugated 8, trick barrels are difficult to taper lap without washing out the breech end of the bore.


Non-trick, traditional rifled barrels are much easier to taper lap without washing out the breech end of the bore.



Now...............................


One can mitigate some of the wind bucking loss by using a traditional rifling pattern with four lands and something on the order of at least a 75/25 groove to land ratio....


Better yet an 80/20 groove to land ratio....



CYA friends, my gut simply tells me the next Black Death will use a non-trick barrel......



Course if this does come about, it will most certainly have to be in the hands of a "shooter"....


Especially outdoors......

So how can I argue against the success of trick barrels?



I wouldn't argue a bit, if, I could get trick barrels today, like were made 12 years ago.

Therefore, save for the corrugated 8, I believe we'll start seeing more and more non-trick barrels in the winner's circle of the big national events....
