Jeff Patterson was out today...
CYA accuracy fool friends:
JPAT came out today with some barrels for me to look at.......
I asked him to bring either an E Turbo or and early V-1 DiOrio, if he had either, so I could check to see if the XP barrel that I fit to an E Turbo some years ago, spearmentin', would work.......
I can't fit an XP barrel to the 10-X actions since the breech bolt raceway is a few thousandths larger, which means the crown of the barrel thread is larger, likewise......the 10-X is about .004"-.005" larger than the E Turbo or early V-1 DiOrio..
Anyway, yes, it will work, and the tenon on this particular XP barrel is only .699".......
So if the ratchet I'm thinking about is even that, we're in business, and if a couple thousandths larger, we're really in business...
.....
Two other bits of information gleaned when JPAT was out.....
Jeff brought an octagon, from back in the day, that I fit about 10 years ago......
My micrometer caught that thing at .2220" in the grooves, right in front of the chamber, and, now get this, .2215" in the grooves at the muzzle.....
In other words, that octagon from back in the day has a full half thousandth of taper, in a 24 inch barrel...
Which is not needed, of course, .0002" is plenty........but that shows how Shilen made them back in the day...
Second thing:
Someone had removed the Jewel trigger from the early V-1 that JPAT brought for me to check my XP barrel with...
And installed a B&A.......which is fine....
But..................(this is for CYankee shooters only, others consult your schmidt)
Trigger changes are not a simple drop-in, with rare exception...
Are you folks sitting down?
With the trigger hanger moved all the way forward, this early V-1 action had .196" of pin fall with the B&A trigger...
Again that's with the hanger all the way forward....
The firing pin footprint depth was, are you still sitting down, .030"......
You folks can do the math.......
That is way, way over driven......by .007 to .008".....
JPAT said it would be corrected when it leaves his shop....
Again CYankee shooters......changing triggers is not a drop-in deal, with very rare exception...

One more point....
On an E-Turbo or early V-1, you can't run more than about .175" -.180" and not need two hands to close the breech bolt....
On late V-1's and the V-3 one can run up to about .220", if needed, and the breech bolt will fall closed......
A very good afternoon spent with Jeff Patterson....thank you Jeff...
