Howdy Bill,

I don't exactly know where to start a new thread since there are several of importance going on, so I'll ask here.

If I recall right, you use a Myers rod for lapping.

What diameter and length do you consider to be the perfect lapping rod?

With stainless barrels, would a non-stainless rod be better? And vice versa for non-stainless barrels?

Always curious.

To answer some of your questions...

I have several lapping rods, and yes, I do use a stainless Myers rod.....44'' long.....

Greg, I use the Myers because it's hard enough to be semi-spring stiff......yes, if I really forced it, it would bend....

Keep something in mind here.....a stainless rod used to clean a stainless barrel is a no-no.....but for lapping the oil and grit negate that characteristic....

My rods are all .187" diameter........since I jig lap I didn't want to make up several different sized lapping jigs...

Greg, here's a lap cast in a Muller 4-MI barrel.....

If you look closely you can see the barrel has been crowned......both muzzle and breech ends must be squared and crowned....without any trace of a check or burr...

If either end of the blank has a check or burr they will destroy the lap.......
(If you look closely at the picture right above this one, you can see where the breech end has also been squared and crowned)

Lastly....doing a perfect taper lapping of a bore is complicated and time consuming.......

In my opinion we need a dedicated bore lapper........who does nothing else but produce perfectly taper lapped bores....

Yes, such barrels would be expensive......but they would be worth their weight in gold......that way one wouldn't have to chamber and fit 30 to find a killer....like I've heard that some do....

Thanks for the details you posted, I had not thought of some of these. And thank you for the pictures, too. There are things to ponder in there.

I keep reading this seeing if something else jumps out at me. And I get more curious about some things, too.

You showed me one of the coolest things ever awhile back. "Click". I did not know that could be done, and it sticks in my mind.

Lapping/cleaning rod material is tricky.

Have any tried other materials like titanium?

They have not been made for a while. Unless you find one that was previously owned and up for sale you will not get one…
