There have been some very good shooting rifles built with Octagons. If it is one of the old ones that was lapped I think you will have a better chance of it being a good one. But then again barrels can be kinda like the ammo lottery

Thank you. I have always heard Jerry Stiller does a great job lapping them.

The old ones were taper lapped (2012 or 2014 and before?), the new ones are straight lapped. Stiller has taper lapped some really good ones, so has Jeremiah Mohr. Paul Tolvstad has also taper lapped them, but not sure if he does them anymore. Jeremiah lapped the Sporter barrel (Octagon) on Harvey Reese's rifle he shot the 2024 Indoor IR Sporter/3-Gun Nationals with, and he did very well!

I will add to Tony's comment by saying barrels are more than 'kinda' like the ammo lottery. When you have a really good barrel, the ammo lottery gets better, a lot better IMO.

Thanks. I appreciate the info. Jerry Stiller is who I was talking to.

Sorry I didn’t post to this thread til today!
Octagons “seemed” to be a little finicky on cleaning. I’ve heard anecdotally that you might get halfway thru a card and rifle said “I’m done, clean me!” LOL. I bought from friend Wally an Octagon, that Bill C had marked with his slugging results. I threaded and chambered it early in my barrel machining career and it didn’t set things on fire, to be charitable. It was installed on a Falcon SAP action that I no longer own. I never saw that action shoot well till friends of mine converted it to PAS. IOW I sold the action.
I think now I’m going to donate the barrel to my schooling and making a protected cone breech and test it on a Turbo PAS action.
If it turns out I’ll let get back on here.
