Friend PedroS:

Pedro, a bit of history.....I'm curious...

When one thinks of Portugal, one usually thinks of a tiny nation by the sea......at least most do..

But that's not the case...If I understand history correctly, tiny Portugal was once the greatest power on the European main land...

Pedro, a question from an old man wanting to know:

Is it true that Portugal was once the greatest power in continental Europe?

Hi Bill,

Glad you ask, because majority of people know little about my Country.

Portugal, nowadays, has a continental territory, bordering Spain on north and east, and having the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south, and two Atlantic archipelagos, Madeira and the Azores.

But it wasn't always like that...

In 1139 the Kingdom of Portugal was established, whose independence was recognized in 1143. In 1297 the borders were defined in the Treaty of Alcanizes, making Portugal the oldest nation-state in Europe with defined borders.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, as a result of its pioneering spirit in the Age of Discoveries, Portugal expanded Western influence and established an empire that included possessions in Africa, Asia, Oceania and South America, becoming an economic powerhouse , the most important political and military force in the world. The Portuguese Empire was the first global empire in history, beginning with the conquest of Ceuta in 1415, but the country's international importance deteriorated during the 19th century, a century marked by Brazil's independence, its largest colony. The so called Portuguese Discovery landmarks, a tall stone carved with the Portuguese coat of arms, can be found almost everywhere in the World.

So, in fact, tiny it might be, Portugal has one of the richest European history, and definitively marked the development of humanity from the 15th century onwards.

Can't be more proud being Portuguese!

There was a time not so long ago the United States had defined borders.

Tony, truer words were never spoken. All of the problems we now have including the rape and killing of U.S. citizens all for the almighty vote. Disgusting.

Pedro, I love sardines and I understand Portugal is world famous for them..

Question: What do you consider to be the best sardines from Portugal?

( Pedro, you may not like sardines so may not have an opinion....which is fine...)

By the way, I personally like sardines in mustard sauce.....

Bill,

Definitely you have to come to Portugal.
We are known for good cooking and fantastic wine!

Sardines do belong to that amazing "cuisine". I do like them a lot, mainly grilled with tomatoes and peppers, either on plate or on bred (look at pictures).
The best season to eat them (here) is from May to October, where superficial waters are warmer, and sardines can heat plankton in bigger quantities. They became bigger and more tasty.

Friend PedroS:

I'd love to....(at least I can dream even if that would be an impossibility...)

Pedro, I want to try some sardines from Portugal....

I checked at Walmart and found this brand that I can have shipped to me...

Do you know anything about this brand of sardines from Portugal?

Hi Bill,

NURI is one of the oldest and most iconic brands of Pinhais & Cª Lda, a cannery from Matosinhos, founded in 1920 and which, to this day, is one of the few companies that remains faithful to the traditional method in all its production.

Expensive it might be, but very worth it.

Friend PedroS:

Thank you for the info on the NURI sardines....I have some on order from Walmart...I can't wait to try them..

Now, a couple more questions about Portugal.

1...What is the official currency for Portugal?

2...Can US Dollars be used for currency in Portugal?

Thank you...

Your LBK and pistol fool friend, Bill Calfee

The official currency is the Euro (€).
USD can't be used, but fairly simple to exchange at any currency office.
