There's only 15 SPEC rifles in the world.........as of today...five more to come...


But those 15 SPEC rifles have sucked all the oxygen out of the air at the various "rimfire accuracy" web sites.


If you go to the various "rimfire accuracy" web sites, 90% of the posts surround these 15 SPEC rifles.


The obsession with 15 SPEC rifles...

The 15 SPEC rifles in the world of big time RFBR take up a huge portion of the posts on the various "rimfire accuracy" web sites..

Take a walkabout around the various rimfire accuracy sites....


I mean, the entire world of big time RFBR is obsessed with these 15 SPEC rifles....


You folks who are lucky enough to own one need to guard the things......cause the rest of big time RFBR either craves one for themselves, or, are so jealous because they don't own one, that they try to put them down......(course that's just human nature)


Nothing else in all of big time RFBR has had the psychological impact on the RFBR populous as have these 15 SPEC rifles.....

You know, I've thought about this several times over the years......not just the last few weeks...


I have such wonderful memories about each of um....


Probably the dearest memories are the calls I've gotten from the owners after a Big National Championship win.


And I've had a bunch of those calls over the years...


I could tell you stories......


As a matter of fact I believe I will....

A quick comment before I proceed....


This picture below shows Merlin's barrel on the action....look at the upper right corner and you can see the step down in the Broughton..

In this picture below you can see there is no step down because I used a slave barrel when I ran my 10 round case head penetration tests...

I built SPEC 4 for a gentleman in New York.....after he received the rifle he wanted it named "Merlin" because he said it shot like magic...which it did.

Some years later this gentleman's health prevented him from competing any longer so he put Merlin up for sale...

A gentleman purchased Merlin, but couldn't do much with it, so Merlin got turned over to Todd Wooten...

One of those sweet memories I've had with my SPEC rifles was when Todd called me after he won a PSL Championship...


Todd told me Merlin was the most accurate rifle he'd ever shot.....


This shows what can happen when you put a killer SPEC rifle in the hands of a talented shooter like Todd Wooten....

Spec Rifles

There has been a lot of talk about what a Spec rifle is and when is a Spec rifle no longer is a Spec rifle etc. etc.

What a Spec rifle is or isn't can be defined in a number of ways. But as for Calfee Spec rifles they were first called that by Jim Pepper.

What exactly he had in mind when he labelled them as that I'm not sure, but I think he was saying he was bidding on a rifle built by Bill Calfee to Bill's own specifications. Bill, if I'm wrong here please help me out.

When is a Spec rifle no longer a Spec rifle? Again, this is a hard question. Every competition rifle I know has been changed in some way(s) since it left the builder's shop. Some of them are changed during actual matches. Guys grasping at straws will try anything to help their scores even if most of the time their efforts are detrimental.

But from all the comments I've read across many different sites it is apparent most of the people posting about Spec rifles have never actually sat down and shot a Calfee or Patterson Spec rifle.

I have been lucky enough to have shot several Calfee Spec rifles, but only one Patterson Spec rifle.

They are special. The quality of workmanship in them is apparent right from the start. They have details other rifles don't share.

As a shooter one should be able to appreciate that.

Will you win more because you have one? Maybe, maybe not. Winning is a completely different question. But if having a rifle, you really enjoy shooting keeps you motivated it will help.

As I said, I have only shot one Jeff Patterson Spec rifle and it was very special. They are worth every penny you pay for one.

If you have the opportunity shoot one you will be impressed.

TDX, I got to shoot that Patterson SPEC, too.....


And it simply put one bullet on top of another.......a single hole, for several groups.....blow you mind amazing...


I understand you had the same experience....five shots producing a single hole in the paper...


If the owner of that amazing Patterson can point it, he/she can win anything, anywhere in the world...
